So, I was reading Empire of Ivory, and I came across a line that sorta threw me for a bit, as it involved a phrase that I had never seen before. The quote is as follows:
“God forbid I should alter such a resolve. Your choice is the choice of Regulus, and I honor you for it.”
The ‘choice of Regulus’, it mentioned. Now, I had never heard of that before. And using the Kindle’s dictionary just brought up the star with that name. So I had to do some research.
Turns out, there is not much that mentions that phrase. Google had only three pages of results about it, and most of those were scanned versions of the book showing that quote. There was also a Harry Potter fanfic by that exact title.
So that was apparently not the right route to an explanation of that phrase. So I searched for ‘Regulus’ to see what people appeared under that name.
And then I found it, on Wikipedia.
Marcus Atilius Regulus. A Roman general, who fought against the Carthaginians. In fact, under his leadership, the Carthaginians were almost defeated, except that they found his terms of peace to be too harsh, and fought on. After changing up some of their leadership, they defeated Regulus outright in the Battle of Tunis, capturing him and 500 of his men.
Now, here’s where it gets interesting. He was sent by the Carthaginians to Rome on parole to negotiate for peace or a prisoner exchange. However, when he got there, instead of doing that, he strongly urged them to keep fighting.
And then… and then, he honored his parole, and went back to Carthage, where he was executed. Think about that. He could have ran. He could have hid away. And he likely would have been able to live out the rest of his life in relative safety. But his honor would not let him do so. So he went back, knowing full well that he would be killed.
And this is what Laurence intended. He could have stayed in France. Bonaparte had given him a very enticing offer. But he couldn’t. His honor would not let him accept it; even though he was sure that he would be taken and killed upon his return, he was determined to go back to England.
The Choice of Regulus.
